Understanding REAZs in Context
The UK is one of the many global economies navigating the balancing act of delivering clean energy to enhance energy security, mitigating climate impacts, insulating communities from adverse project impacts and managing competing uses of land and sea. We argue in this blog post that the EU’s REAZ offers replicable templates for the UK’s energy transition, and that same can be adapted into a strategic zoning system that pre-identifies suitable onshore and offshore areas for energy deployment, accelerates consenting by addressing key climate and spatial questions early, and protects communities and ecosystems.

The 10-day international conference brought together around 90 doctoral and post-doctoral researchers from Latin America, Africa, Europe, the UK, Australia and the United States, alongside more than 20 leading scholars and policymakers. The School provided an intensive programme exploring the institutional dynamics that have shaped, and continue to reshape, regulatory governance across Latin America and the wider Global South.

In June 2025, I received an exciting invitation to contribute to the BBC’s A House Through Time. The programme is presented by distinguished historian Prof David Olusoga and its sixth series focuses on a property at Calton Hill, Edinburgh. One of the early residents was Mr John Steell (or Steel(e)) Snr (c.1774-1848), a carver and gilder who moved with his family from Aberdeen to Edinburgh but later faced significant financial problems. The producers were therefore keen to speak to someone about the history of debt and insolvency law in Scotland, which is where I came in.

The reality is that with such growth comes a significant increase to its workforce, technological advancements and a move to deeper waters-all of which could exacerbate existing health and safety challenges and concerns. While efforts are being made to manage these challenges, many have suggested that more could be done. In this regard, with funding from the National Decommissioning Centre (NDC) and partnership with the Aberdeen University Centre for Energy Law (AUCEL), a workshop was held on the 26th of May…

Reflections on my participation in the Energy Law in the light of the green transition towards net zero emissions (ELAWNET 2026).
By Santiago José Osorio Gracia, LLM Candidate in Energy Transition Law, 51cg
The LLM in Energy Transition Law at the 51cg consistently challenges us to question concepts that we, as lawyers, often take for granted. For me, a pivotal moment occurred in my renewable energy law class when we were presented with a striking premise: “Not all renewable energy projects are sustainable.” Addressing this statement in an…

In 2019, I assessed the UK’s Climate Change Act 2008 for the publisher Palgrave, just after the framework’s 10th anniversary.1 Here, I found that this extensive Westminster statute remained nationally important and even internationally pioneering; but I also highlighted that the Scottish Parliament had pushed the envelope of progressive climate governance even further. This was achieved through passage of the Climate Change (Scotland) Act 2009.
The national Climate Change Act 2008 mandated a 34% reduction in UK greenhouse gas emissions by 2020, measured from 1990 emissions levels. The Scottish Parliament’s 2009 Act ramped this…

Let’s start with the academic side (mostly so that the university is happy I’ve written something educational first!). In Helsinki, I only have one or two lectures per class a week, and attendance is very strict; some of my classes fail you if you miss more than one lecture, and most require at least 75% attendance to pass.
