Nothing. Staff were so busy I was frequently apologised to that they did not have time to supervise or teach me. While everyone was nice and friendly, I was often begging for any member kf staff regardless of job role to allow me to even shadow them.
Everyone in the wards was very friendly and open to helping me get experience
Having a base ward was really good! I became very comfortable with the stroke team

Staff on the ward allowed me to join them everyday on ward round, I was included in consultations and continually quizzed, which at first was scary but they made me feel incredibly welcome and taught me things I didn’t know from my junior years
The medical staff especially the FY1 and FY2 doctors were very helpful and welcoming. They understood that ward rounds and discussions could feel overwhelming as a medical student, and they did their best to talk me through it and involve me into their team. I never felt like a nuisance or burden to them.

The FYs, IMTs and CFs were very welcoming, supportive and helpful. Most of the consultants were also welcoming but some did not even bother to look at you or ask your name. The nursing staff were also really good.

Friendly.
Often saw patients for practical procedures, clerking/history/examination was not as frequent but was helpful.
Got good experience talking to patients and doing practical procedures as well as taking history’s and doing examinations
Lots of interaction with patients, occasionally had to look/ask for these but drs and nurses were helpful and enthusiastic if you showed interest

I was able to clerk patients and strengthen my history taking and examination skills. Moreover, I was able to do procedures like venepuncture, cannulations and ECGs on these patients. I had very pleasant experiences with the patients I interacted with, and I felt as if I became confident in building a rapport with patients.
Good interaction Learning points for future interaction with patients that I need to practice. But I had lots of opportunity to see stable patients.
This is not something I felt I struggled with before but definitely felt I improved throughout the block, especially in difficult scenarios

Oncology in ARI Ward 114. Everyone was willing to have me come along to help/watch, as well as discuss cases and teach about acute management.
Cardiology. FY doctors were very good. Amia nurses and drs very good at providing opportunities
Respiratory hub To all of the doctors in 107, thank you for teaching me you made me feel so welcome and included. I gained a lot of social experience on this ward compared to the others
I really loved my oncology ward experience. I felt like the afternoon shifts were very useful because the chaos usually calmed down after 5pm, and the doctors on the late shift would have more time to explain and give me jobs to do. Also, 6pm was when the nurses distributed medications, so I was able to get my subcutaneous injections signed off as well as IV medication reconstitution signed off. Moreover, being involved in the morning rounds was very helpful in order to keep track of the patients and also have a sense of continuous care when seeing the same patients on consecutive days. I was able to follow any medication changes or changes in their health, which made me feel closer to the patient and feel more like a doctor. I really enjoyed my AMIA experience aswell, everyday was a different ward, and it was fast-paced, but I learnt a lot from there. There was enough medical staff so I felt supported.

Dedicated teaching time. Even just an hour a week.
Too many clashes on the timetable/classes scheduled too closely together made planning days quite challenging. Sometimes tutors were late purely because they were informed of a different time. Sometimes clinics would have no doctors to shadow as the relevant doctors were on leave, which would result in unnecessary commutes and frustration. Better correspondence between the hospital and the university would greatly improve the experience and quality of life for students.
Felt time on Amia/ Ed icu was harder in terms of being in a different place every day.

I got sent away a lot from ward 303, not sure if this was because of inadequate staffing or no time etc Clinic week was quite disappointing, when I showed up some of the doctors didn’t have much interest in teaching me, they also didn’t know I was coming I think overall the layout of the block was spread correctly across the 6 weeks, but they were so many online classes or clinical sessions I had to leave placement to attend, during ward time hours. In my opinion ward time is way more valuable than any other class I could be going to right now
For oncology, I feel like the ANP clinic was not as helpful and quite boring since it was just going through a chemocare checklist, so I think that could have been introduced as a short explanation on the ward. And this session could be replaced with more time on the ward. The other clinics were very helpful. I feel that in ED and ICU there weren't many learning opportunities, as it was such a busy environment that I felt more like a burden on the doctors. So it was mainly just watching the doctors.
I think it should be stressed more in the PrEP week how comfortable you need to become feeling uncomfortable - as it is such a new environment with new people and new practices, going onto ward teaching, it can be very difficult understanding where you belong

Elizabeth Page - Bank Healthcare Support Worker/Student Nurse at Dr Gray's Hospital, Elgin - Lizzie was very helpful in the Blood Hub during our Elgin placement, by giving me and another student opportunities to practice taking bloods via winged and straight needle, and also in taking ECGs
Tereza Takkou FY1 in oncology Ward 114 was very helpful for getting me involved in the ward and seeing interesting experiences. Josh Pritchard RN in oncology Ward 114 was very kind about letting me do practical procedures and gave good advice when supervising. E-Shuen Wong FY1 in Ward 103a was supportive during procedures, welcoming to the ward, and gave good future advice for upcoming university endeavours.
- Annie Caldwell, CDF in ward 107 has been an incredible senior to me. From the start of my block she welcomed me and took me in. She is a very good teacher and always made learning points after consulting each patient. - also Amy Macphersom GPST in ward 107, for helping me with all my practical procedures, breaking down the writing on trakcare. She was an amazing teacher and was lovely to work alongside. She made me feel like part of the team and not a shadow
1. Teresa Takkou and Natalie FY1 in Oncology (ARI). They really helped me out with getting my sign offs and explaining what was going on in the ward rounds. I felt very safe and supported with them. 2. Brandon Tan ST5 Oncology (ARI). He explained everything to me well, and entertained my questions even if they were silly. He inspired me to really enjoy oncology as I could see the dedication with which he treats his patients, but also the fun environment he created for everyone working with him. His teachings were great, and he would let me follow him on the interesting procedures and consultant ward rounds. 3. Duncan IMT2 in Oncology (ARI). He was the first to always include me into ward rounds, and he made sure that I achieved what I wanted to everyday. If I was ever sitting there lost or bored, he would either explain a patient case to me or he would find jobs for me to do. He made me feel like I was wanted there and part of the team.
