The welcome pack by education administrator Sharlene was very helpful and answered any initial queries that I may have had. On the first day we had a welcome tour by Dr Learmonth where she gave us a warm welcome and showed us round the hospital and answered all our queries. She instantly made us feel at ease and excited for our time in Orkney .

- was able to take histories from patients in many specialties and wards including cardiology, rehabilitation ward, the geriatric clinic, ent clinic etc. - carried out cardiovascular, respiratory and neurological examinations of patients. - managed to take bloods, perform blood glucose test as well as talk through peak flow meter with patient. - accompanied physio therapy to a patients home and was able to be observe the session with the patient and help provide assistance with the various exercise. - performed ecg’s on patients as well as blood pressures to test for postural hypotension. In addition, in the ent clinic performed a number of otoscopy examinations on patients. - observed clinics with dietician and diabetic nurse.

The rheumatology clinic with Dr Youssef was a highly interesting clinic and provided exposure to a wide variety of different rheumatological conditions. Dr Youssef is an excellent teacher, who took time to carefully explain different presentations and underlying pathology to me. He made me feel like part of his team by actively involving me and listening to my thoughts. With patients informed consent, I was able to inspect and palpate various musculoskeletal findings which helped enhance my understanding and gain experience in recognising the physical findings. My time at the cardiology clinic with Dr Fox was beneficial at enhancing my understanding of common cardiac presentations, and I’m very grateful to Dr Fox for the opportunity to observe a DC cardioversion which was a valuable learning experience and provided insight into the practical management of arrhythmias.

- Personally I would suggest fewer days needed for the rehabilitation proforma as did my best to stretch it out over 2.5 days as realistically could have completed it in one day but understand it may be different regarding on student’s confidence and patients available etc.

I had a brilliant experience at the Balfour and it’s hard to nominate just one member of staff. Firstly, would like to nominate Sharlene McAllister the medical education administrator for her outstanding support during my placement in Orkney. Initially I felt quite nervous about coming to `Orkney for five weeks but her emails and kind words made me feel welcome and helped me settle in. She regularly checked in to make sure everything was going well and always available to offer help if needed. Sharlene provided well-structured time tables each week ensuring everything went smoothly which contributed to a great learning experience. Secondly would like to nominate Dr Fiona Learmonth for her brilliant teaching and support during my placement. From meeting her on the first day, she immediately put me at ease and created a welcoming learning environment in all of her sessions. She is incredibly knowledgeable, approachable and every teaching session was engaging and enjoyable. Her enthusiasm for teaching and ability to exp complex topics has allowed me to develop my clinical knowledge. Dr Learmonth is an excellent role model and I look up to her as the kind of doctor I aspire to be with her professionalism and compassion. I am very grateful for her time, knowledge and guidance during this placement. Thanks to both Sharlene and Dr Learmonth for an excellent placement
