Clinicians introducing me to patients.
The staff were very friendly, I felt like part of the team
The introduction week helped me feel welcome. The lectures cover content which could have come up during placement, which helped me feel more prepared. On the wards the staff were friendly and approachable.
My supervisor was very welcoming. Of course during the first introductory week we had teaching and were introduced to some of the facilities and staff at the hospital. Everybody I met on he block were nice and helpful.
Good supervisors who checked up on me and made me feel welcome
The staff were all lovely and treated me with respect.
Most staff were helpful in seeking clinical opportunities and generally approachable whenever we had any questions or concerns. They would explain what they were doing / what was going on if we seemed confused.

Little interaction with patients. Most cases were observing the doctor assess the patient. Old Adults psychiatry was pretty much impossible to get a history from the patients. Felt uncomfortable in forensics so did not push to have much interaction with the patients.
I was able to interview, examine and clerk numerous patients throughout my time in the block
I had the opportunity to observe and participate in taking patient histories. This has helped me to improve my confidence in carrying out a psychiatric assessment.
Good experiences with a wide variety of patient presentations and willingness to engage with the process.
Lots of history taking and mental state examinations but no chance for physical examinations
My interactions with patients were very good
Valuable experience to speak to patients with mental health conditions in real life as apposed to simulated patients. It gave a good insight into how communication can be challenging.

General adults was my favourite part of the block. Interesting patients and lovely staff.
General adult psychiatry, has the most variety and the consultant on the ward was very friendly
After taking a history I was able to present my findings to my supervisor, who provided feedback that I was able apply to subsequent history-taking opportunities. It was beneficial to observe a full psychiatric assessment to see how the consultant approached sensitive questions and explored unusual beliefs with the patient.
My block was psychiatry mental health and particularly being present in MDT meetings and listening to the staff provided great insight into patient management and triage.
Psychiatry
Liaison Psychiatry was an incredibly enjoyable placement and I learned lots about risk assessment of patients in A&E. Furthermore I learned lots about the difficulties faced by patients with psychiatric disorders in a general hospital training. This placement provided me with insight on how to treat them in future.

Lochhead placement was not a good experience. Spent 6 hours sat in the corner of a room, little communication from the clinical team to what was happening (think they forgot about us). When handover happened, the on call consultant asked everyone to introduce themself. She was pointing round in the circle to ask members to introduce them selves and completely missed myself and the other student I was with. Did not acknowledge our existence us at all. Improvements - change start time to loch head hub placement to 4/5pm onwards??
The first week (which is the teaching week), I think the lectures should be more interactive
It was challenging at times not having a set timetable, as it was difficult to plan my time and make the most of the learning opportunities available.
The induction week should have been more about the hospital and how to navigate around, etc. rather than teaching sessions. Sometimes the block felt too strict as we were constantly told about what we should be doing (returning the badge, completing the e-portfolio) and it did not feel really friendly.
I’m not sure the initial week has to be as long as it is. 5 straight days of lectures is a lot and compared to being on the ward I feel you do not learn as much
Very engaging and interesting when clinicians use real life examples of patients to teach.

Dr. Sean Cassidy . Royal Cornhill Hospital, General Adult Psychiatry. Dr. Cassidy was very welcoming to all students. The quality of teaching was very good and he was more than happy to answer questions. He was always available and happy to have students.
Dr Ian Drever, General Adults. He made me feel included, explained things to me and gave me guidance on learning opportunities. Was good with keeping in contact via email. He is a good example of how to communicate and interact with patients. I would be very happy if I become a doctor like him.
Dr Steven Hay He works in outpatient general adult psychiatry in Cornhill Block A He was very friendly and professional when dealing with patients. He was also very supportive of my learning.
Dr MacDonald who works in Huntly Ward allowed me to see a variety of patients and supported my learning experience. Dr Kirk who worked on Ellon clinic was helpful to allow me to see patient home visits and witness how the district clinic works.

Dr. Theresa Slade, Consultant Psychiatrist, really helpful and supported my learning throughout my placement and listened to any concerns I had.
Dr Syed Abram - Brodie Ward and Liaison Psychiatry - Dr Abram was incredibly supportive and helpful throughout the entirety of my placement. He provided me with opportunities to practice many skills and provided fantastic feedback on these. He was particularly great on my first few days checking up on me even when I was not assigned to him going above and beyond. Dr Harri Kallat - FY1 - Liaison Psychiatry - Dr Kallat did a great job teaching,e the teaching me about the NHS systems and he really included me and made sure I got the best teaching opportunities possible. He was always available when I needed help and was full of advice for my future placements.
Dr Mohammad Shaaban, works in new Craig’s hospital as a psychiatric consultant. Demonstrated great patient report, included us in the clinical conversation and provided great teaching for certain psychiatric conditions.
