Nice staff
My block was in Aberdeen. The midwives in the maternity hospital were all very sweet and made me feel welcome.
After the paeds handover, specifically for children’s ward, the clinicians regularly approached me and led me to the appropriate site. This made me feel included and valued as part of the team.
The staff - all staff were very welcoming and enthusiastic about teaching.
Certain members of staff were very engaged with medical students and this helped learning.
Dr Tracey Sturgeon made me feel extremely welcome, as did most of the OBGYN team.

Variety of presentations, most were happy for me to be present
I was able to examine multiple patients during clinics in the gynae week, however examinations were more limited with obstetric patients as antenatal clinic does not perform routine exams, and patients on the labour ward were not good candidates for examination. It struggled to find opportunities to do bloods and cannulas as well.
I was able to find patients in the repro block who were willing to be examined and was supervised by an appropriate hcp who gave me useful feedback.
This was an excellent block and I got a lot of patient interactions from taking histories, to examination, to practising more block specifics like speculum examination and newborn examination. I really enjoyed being able to interact with patients.

I really enjoyed the obstetric surgery shift as I got to see multiple C-sections on multiple different patients with different outcomes and how they were handled.
Paeds: - Performing a newborn examination - Attending the ward round on the children’s ward - Shadowing clinicians assessing newborns in theatre Repro - Witnessing the delivery of babies - Gynae and Obstetric theatre were very interesting - Midwifery shift was useful in understanding maternal and foetal examinations
All tutorials were excellent for both blocks - the teaching was very well done. Concepts I had struggled to understand so well on my own were made very clear by tutors.
Child health: the nursing shift with Dee was very useful and worthwhile!
Dr Tracey Sturgeon for repro went out of her way to facilitate lots of good education for us all and was truly great to work with.
Please suggest any improvements to this educational experience.

Repro - none of note Child health - did not enjoy the end of block assessment at all, I know the tutor was trying to help us learn but the experience felt very judgemental and made me not want to contribute due to this

Both simulation sessions in this block ran significantly (inc. 45mins+) over time and this affected the schedule for the rest of the day. Block 1 sims may need to have fewer scenarios because the students are less experienced and therefore take more time.
The Inverness paediatric end of block assessment session was, not only for myself, the most uncomfortable session I have ever been a part of in my 4 years of studying medicine. The session was designed to be stressful, with a paper unlike our exams, and peer marking which fostered embarrassment and humiliation. Furthermore, the feedback discussion within the session was so intentionally and publically disparaging, with phrases like “You just need to think and use your brain“ and “The answer is obvious“ in common use, that it lead to almost laughter within the group as a means of dealing with the absolute shock. At the end of the session, after already a great deal of effective tourment, we were asked to publically discuss our scores. That is unacceptable and again intentional. I refused, not because I had a particularly bad score, but because I in principal fundamentally disagreed with how we had been treated and the idea of publically sharing our scores. There was a discussion point at the end about liking to hear feedback in person first rather than in the SCEF. Frankly, respect is earned and reciprocated, so no. I hope that with this feedback there will be some serious, positive improvements made.

Overall good Repro - all good and beneficial to learning Child health - mostly good, but it was clear that some tutors were seeing the presentation for the first time in a long time (neuro, gastro etc)
The debrief sessions should be made optional rather than mandatory. I did not find them helpful.
Paeds: I really enjoyed and learnt a lot from Dr Paul’s and Dr Reddy’s tutorials, they were very engaging and informational. I also really appreciated the child protection lecture, this was really useful especially after witnessing suspected NAI cases on placement (unfortunately I do not remember the name of the Dr but he was very good!).
Very good tutorials - I felt being in smaller groups and being interactive really improved my understanding of concepts.
Tutorials were mostly good, on relevant topics with engaged tutors.

Tracey Sturgeon Consultant obstetrician and gynaecologist in Raigmore Very welcoming, looked out for us, and provided excellent learning opportunities. Offered additional opportunities too. Clearly was happy to help and I knew I could email if I had any problems.

One of the best, truly.
