This summer, I completed an Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) research internship at the 51cg, looking at how neurodivergent students experience learning in higher education and what could be done to make teaching and the curriculum more inclusive.
I was really interested in this project because it brings together a lot of the areas I am interested in, particularly psychology, education and supporting people with different learning needs. University teaching can be quite different depending on the course, lecturer or type of class, and something that works really well for one student might create a barrier for someone…

Over the course of my degree, my interest in psychology has increasingly grown towards cognitive neuroscience, particularly related to language processing and memory. As I have engaged with different areas of psychology over the course of my degree, I have become especially interested in how language is encoded and represented in memory, and how behavioural and neuroscience methods can be combined to study these processes.
This internship will enable me to work on a cognitive neuroscience project examining the production…

My thesis, titled “From Noise to Meaning”, explored how autistic adults understand vocoded (degraded) speech. Specifically, it examined whether prior knowledge of (previously encountered) sentence content and/or familiarity with the speaker’s voice helps listeners make sense of unclear speech. We found that participants with higher autistic traits used prior sentence content only when listening to a familiar speaker, but did not appear to use this information when the speaker changed. There are many challenges of communicating complex health information to the population, and poorly communicated health information can create distrust, confusion and risky health behaviours. I did an Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion internship with the university over the summer of 2025. My internship topic was evaluating accessibility and inclusivity in teaching materials, supervised by Dr Zeshu Shao. This is something that I’m passionate about because, being neurodivergent, I understand how important it is to access equal learning opportunities which take individual differences into consideration. Furthermore, it is also important to feel represented within teaching practices.

My first task was to create a Content Review Checklist which I could use to review materials. I decided to focus on the Level 2 and 3 methodology courses, as methodology…

Menopause is an important and inevitable life stage for most women, transgender men and non-binary people assigned female at birth; however, until recently, there was little research looking into how autistic women experience menopause.
