The Music Department boasts a high quality visiting tutor staff who will provide​ access to 10 free, 1 hour, one-to-one lessons on their principal study. Students can also elect to split their studies between two instruments and/or voice. Students select the pieces they work on in negotiation with their instrumental/voice tutor. Alongside instrumental and vocal lessons students are required to join one of the department's many ensembles working in weekly rehearsals towards high quality public performances. As part of this course students are required to attend concerts from the Music Department Concert Series. The course is assessed through a 10 minute recital at the end of the course and a reflective essay on performance practice.

All students on the BMus Ed or BMus MusCom programmes must undertake additional study in Piano Keyboard Skills. These additional study sessions will focus on the development of relevant vocational skills. First study pianists will also be required to take these additional study sessions.
Where students are studying more than one instrument/voice, they can elect in advance to have them equally weighted, or weighted in the proportion 70% (main instrument) and 30% (second instrument) for purposes of assessment.

Where students are studying more than one instrument / voice, marks may be equally weighted or can be weighted in the proportion 70% (main instrument) and 30% (second instrument) for assessment purposes.​

Students are being constantly assessed by their tutors in this one-to-one learning context.

Feedback to students is on a continual basis in this one-to-one learning context. Tutors will arrange for a session to go over their comments with the student following the submission of the report.
