Duration: 12 months full-time or 24 months part-time (MSc); 9 months full-time (PgDip) Aim: To equip students for careers developing and expanding current knowledge of drugs. To achieve this the programme will provide a multi-disciplinary approach to the study of drug discovery and development; mechanisms of drug action; preclinical and clinical trials; and regulatory affairs. Content: The programme of taught courses will comprise lectures, tutorials, practical classes and demonstrations in clinical departments. The curriculum includes biochemical and molecular aspects of drug action; drug transport, metabolism and excretion; toxicology; pharmacokinetics; statistics; computing studies; industrial aspects of drug development; therapeutics; therapeutic drug monitoring; the influence of disease on drug handling; drug-drug interactions; the design and conduct of volunteer and clinical trials; monitoring drug safety. No candidate will be allowed to progress to the final stage as an MSc candidate if they fail to achieve an appropriate standard in the above programme. MSc candidates with a registered medical qualification may be able to carry out a clinical research project in the final stage under supervision of one of the medical staff.
