Duration: 12 months full-time (MSc); 9 months full-time (PgDip). Content: The programme will concentrate on molecular genetics as it relates to Medicine, covering the full range of applications from pre-natal diagnosis and disease susceptibility to treatment through gene therapy. Candidates shall be required to attend the following designated programme of courses:- First Half-Session MB 5002 Genetic Techniques (15 credit points) MB 5003 Genetics of Common Diseases (30 credit points) MB 5004 Human Population Genetics (7.5 credit points) MB 5005 Medical Genetics (7.5 credit points) In addition to lectures, the above courses will include instruction in Statistics, practical training in gene cloning and a major essay assignment, respectively. Second Half-Session MB 5502 Clinical and Biochemical Genetics (30 credit points) MB 5504 Data Analysis (15 credit points) In addition to lectures, the above courses will include practical training in molecular genetic techniques such as PCR, RFLP and genotype and haplotype analysis, and a project essay assignment, respectively. Final Stage MB 5701 Project in Medical Molecular Genetics (75 credit points) [MSc candidates] or MB 5703 Laboratory Training (15 credit points) [Diploma candidates] Throughout the programme, students will be given further instruction in aspects of laboratory safety and will attend sessions to improve their computing skills. Assessment: By course work, by written examinations, or by a combination of these, as prescribed for each course. All candidates shall attend an oral examination, and MSc candidates shall be required to submit a dissertation on their project.
