Duration: 24 months part-time Aims: The programme aims to provide a response to the continuing professional development needs of qualified teachers who wish to extend their skills and knowledge into the areas of Media Education in general and Media Studies in particular. The aims of the programme are to: To enhance and extend professional practice in the teaching of media education. To provide the knowledge and understanding of the range of theoretical (including historical) perspectives interpretive, social, creative to reflect the multi-disciplinary modality of media studies. To provide the advanced knowledge and understanding required to deliver enhanced learning and teaching in NQ Media Studies courses at all levels, and media aspects of other courses (e.g. English). To provide a critical appreciation of how the Key Concepts of Media Education are integrated in a media text and how they impact on each other. To give students opportunities to understand and review critically pedagogies used to deliver media education in general and Media Studies in particular; and the role and function of production in Media Studies courses, in particular digital production. To examine theories of learning in the context of media education and to engage the students in an interrogation of how media is used in the classroom and in how children use media. To examine policy initiatives and their relationship with media education, e.g. Curriculum for Excellence, Citizenship, etc. Content: The certificate programme is comprised of two compulsory courses: ED 5183 Media Education: The Key Aspects ED 5184 The Media in Education Assessment: Formative assessment is a feature of all courses.
