Duration: 12 months full-time of 24 months part-time (MSc); 9 months full-time (PgDip); 4 months full-time (PgCert). Aims: The MSc in Globalization provides students with an advanced social scientific understanding of globalization processes. The programme promotes awareness and critical reflection on the major conceptual and empirical aspects of global processes. The programme covers the principal theoretical, historical, social, cultural, political and economic dimensions of globalization. Syllabus: The programme will consist of 180 credit points comprising: Two compulsory 30 credit point modules: Theories of Globalization, and Dimensions of Globalization. Two 30 credit point options: a research methods course, and an additional course (usually in the School of Social Science) which is agreed with the programme co-ordinator. A dissertation of 10-12,000 words on an agreed topic (60 credit points). The compulsory Globalization courses are 100% continuous assessment. Students can obtain a Certificate in Globalization on satisfactory completion of modules to the value of 60 credit points, or a Diploma should they exit with modules worth 120 credit points passed successfully. The MSc requires the student to pass the dissertation and the six modules. The degree of MSc shall not be awarded to a candidate who fails to achieve a CAS mark of 9 or above in SO 5901, irrespective of their performance in other courses. Notes: Entry to this degree programme is normally restricted to those with a 2(i) degree in sociology, a social science discipline, a cognate discipline, or equivalent. The research methods option should be selected from postgraduate courses taught either in the Department of Sociology, or more broadly in the School of Social Science, and in consultation with the degree programme co-ordinator. The optional course in the second half-session should be selected in consultation with the degree programme co-ordinator. The dissertation will be completed towards the end of the degree programme.
