Duration: 12 months full-time or 24 months part-time (MLitt); 9 months full-time or 18 months part-time (PgDip). Content: Candidates undertake the following: EL 5013 Research Methods in Language and Linguistics (10 credit points) Or HI 5053 Introduction to Historical Research (20 credit points) Or HI 5029 Medieval Texts and Manuscripts (20 credit points) And Courses from an extensive list which, along with the above, total 120 credit points, with the approval of the Programme Co-ordinator. Courses should normally total 60 credit points in each half-session. Note: Unless prior proficiency can be demonstrated, HI 5016 Basic Latin for Historians (20 credit points) and HI 5516 Intermediate Latin for Postgraduates (20 credit points), are compulsory. Masters Stage HI 5529 Medieval Studies Dissertation I: Sources and Source Criticism (60 credit points) HI 5903 Dissertation in Medieval Studies (MLitt) (60 credit points) Assessment: By course work, by written examination, or by a combination of these, as prescribed for each course. Candidates who proceed to the Masters stage will be required to submit a dissertation on a topic agreed in advance with their supervisor. The degree of MLitt shall not be awarded to a candidate who fails to achieve a CAS mark of 9 in HI 5903, irrespective of their performance in other courses.
