Duration: 12 months full-time or 24 months part-time (MSc); 9 months full-time or 18 months part-time (PgDip). Aim: To equip students for careers/research in the development and safety assessment of new and current drugs. To achieve this, the programme will provide a multi-disciplinary approach to the study of drug discovery and development; mechanisms of drug-induced toxicity; preclinical and clinical trials; regulatory affairs. Content: The programme of taught courses will comprise lectures, tutorials, practical classes and small group demonstrations in laboratories and clinical departments. The curriculum includes biochemical and molecular aspects of drug action; drug transport, metabolism and excretion, with an emphasis on humans; molecular biology and bioanalytical methods e.g. mass spectroscopy; mechanisms of drug-induced toxicity, reproductive toxicology, immunotoxicology and neurotoxicology; pharmacokinetics; toxicokinetics; statistics; computing studies; industrial aspects of drug development; therapeutics; therapeutic drug monitoring; the design and conduct of volunteer and clinical trials; assessment of drug safety.
