Candidates with other qualifications (e.g. Honours degree in Geography, Geology, Soil Science) will also be considered if they can show a supporting qualification at a sufficiently advanced level in a biological subject. All candidates must have taken at least one substantial course in ecology at undergraduate level. (These requirements may be modified in individual cases on consideration of a special application.) Duration: 12 months full-time (MRes, MSc); 9 months full-time (PgDip). Content: The Masters programme aims to provide training for research on the biology, ecology and sustainable management of biological resources, for students intending to carry on to do a PhD, and for those seeking careers in ecological research, conservation and management. Potential doctoral students will gain multi-disciplinary research skills and practical experience of working in active research environments alongside established scientists and will be trained to develop, execute and manage individual research projects. Students will also receive training via taught modules based on current research of contributing scientists drawn from diverse ecological disciplines. The programme is run within the School of Biological Sciences. Candidates First Half-Session Candidates must attend the take up to a total of 120 credits of courses from the range of elective courses on offer: PL 5001 Plant Ecology (15 credit points) BI 5009 Experimental Design and Analysis (15 credit points) EK 5001 Personal Research Development (10 credit points) ZO 5301 Population Ecology (15 credit points) EV5004 Microbial Ecology (7.5 credits) BI5010 Statistics for Complex Design (7.5 credit points) EK 5402 Molecular Ecological Techniques (7.5 credit points) ZO5303 Aquaculture (7.5 credit points) Second Half-Session ZO 5702 Deep-Sea & Estuarine Environments (15 credit points) ZO 5507 Marine Landscapes & Spatial Management (7.5 credit points) EK 5506 Ecology and Society (15 credit points) BI 5504 Foundations of Environmental Governance( 7.5 credit points) EK 5502 Advanced Ecological Concepts (7.5 credit points) EK 5702 Applied Ecological Modelling (7.5 credit points) EK 5404 Climate Change (7.5 credit points) PL 5504 Biology and Ecology of Mycorrhizas (7.5 credit points) ZO 5903 Network Science (7.5 credit points) ZO 5700 Marine Top Predator Ecology (7.5 credit points) TB 5700 Biological Conservation in the Tropics (7.5 credit points) EV 5510 Introduction to GIS (7.5 credit points) EV 5511 Advanced Spatial Information Analysis (7.5 credit points) EK 5903 Controlled Environmental Research (22.5 credit points) EK 5902 Ecological Methods Field Trip (7.5 credit points) EK 5905 Research Project Planning (7.5 credit points) Or another appropriate course as approved by the Programme Co-ordinator. Only candidates who complete the above programme at an appropriate standard will be allowed to progress to the project stage. Candidates who fail to achieve the standard for progression to, or who elect not to proceed to, the final stage shall be awarded a Postgraduate Diploma if they have achieved the appropriate number of credits for that award. Final Stage (MRes/MSc only) ZO 5901 Project in Ecology (60 credit points) Or EK5904 Individual Research Project (without Bettyhill) (67.5 credit points) Assessment: By a combination of (1) written assignments and laboratory reports as prescribed for each course, and (2) a dissertation covering the research project. MRes, MSc and Diploma candidates are usually required to attend an oral examination. Only candidates who complete (1) at an appropriate standard will be allowed to progress to the final stage leading to an MRes/MSc degree. {| |}~#r hShxQh"cfhSOJQJhS>*OJQJ^JhSOJQJ^JhS6OJQJ^JhShSOJQJ_{| ~Kr gdS$a$gdSgdS$ D%da$gdS$%bW&^Wqr # p@ Hd9gdSgdS gdSr gdS21h:pxQ.
