Duration: 12 months full-time (MSc); 9 months full-time (PgDip). Content: The courses are drawn from across the School of Biological Sciences and are taught in a series of three or six week modules, together with instructions in related common skills. A number of courses that are core to other programmes can be selected for this programme. Following the instructional stage of the programme of courses, students may proceed to the individual research project which may either be standard (60 credits) or advanced (90 credits). This will culminate in the submission of a thesis in the format of a peer reviewed paper. Candidates must also pass general examinations before being permitted to proceed to the thesis stage. Candidates must attend the following designated programme of courses unless they have previously passed courses deemed by the Programme Co-ordinator to be equivalent to one or more of the specified modules, in which case another course must be taken from those indicated. First Stage All candidates must take the following courses: EV 5902 Literature Review in Environmental Sciences (3 credit points) SS 5904 Land Use and the Environment on Deeside (3 credit points) EK 5404 Climate Change (7.5 credit points) And/Or EV 5510 Introduction to GIS (7.5 credit points) In addition to the above courses, candidates must take courses to the value of 45 credit points, if choosing EV5510 and EV5404, or 52.5 credit points, if choosing EV5510 or EV5404, from those listed below, in the context of timetable constraints (total 66 credit points): BI 5501 Nature Conservation in Britain (15 credit points) BI 5504 Foundations of Environmental Governance (7.5 credit points) SS 5500 Remediation Technology (15 credit points) EV 5800 Environmental Analysis (15 credit points) PL 5504 Biology and Ecology of Mycorrihizas (7.5 credit points) TB 5700 Biological Conservation in the Tropics (7.5 credit points) FY 5801 Tropical Forest Ecology & Management (15 credit points) BI 5802 Ecological and Environmental Modelling (15 credits) Or another appropriate course as approved by the programme co-ordinator.
