Duration: 12 months full-time or 24 months part-time (MSc); 9 months full-time (PgDip); 4 months full-time (PgCert). Aims: The MSc in Sociology provides students with an advanced programme of sociological study, which may act as a conversion programme for students whose first degree is outside the discipline. The programme is therefore designed to develop students understanding and critical reflection on the major debates and conceptual and empirical aspects of sociological study. Syllabus: The programme will consist of 180 credit points comprising: (1) Two compulsory 30 credit point modules: Advanced Social Theory and Qualitative Sociology: Philosophy and Methods. (2) Two 30 credit point option modules: two additional, elective courses, one of which is related to the dissertation project (one course from among postgraduate courses in the Department of Sociology, and normally, the other from among courses in the School of Social Science, as agreed with the programme co-ordinator). (3) A dissertation project of 12,500 words on an agreed topic (60 credit points). Content: SO 5011 Qualitative Sociology: Philosophy and Methods (30 credit points) SO 5014 Advanced Social theory (30 credit points) First Elective Option (30 credit points) from among one of: SO 5512 Dimensions of Globalization (30 credit points) SO 5513 Quantitative Sociology: Philosophy and Methodologies (30 credit points) SO 5514 Religious Belief and Practice in the Modern World (30 credit points) SO 5515 The Comparative Study of European Societies (30 credit points) SO 5517 Sex, Gender and Violence: Contemporary Critical Approaches (30 credit points) Second Elective Option, Related to the Dissertation Topic (30 credit points) SO 5904 Dissertation (60 credit points) Assessment: Assessment methods vary from course to course and include essays, reports, exercises and presentations. Courses are 100% continuous assessment, perhaps, with the exception of the specialist option. Students can obtain a Postgraduate Certificate on satisfactory completion of modules to the value of 60 credit points, or a Diploma in Sociology should they exit with modules worth 120 credit points passed successfully. The MSc in Sociology requires the student to pass the dissertation and the six modules. The degree of MSc shall not be awarded to a candidate who fails to achieve a CAS mark of 9 or above in the Dissertation () 5904), irrespective of their performance in other courses. Notes: 1. Entry to this degree programme is normally restricted to those with a 2(i) degree in a social science discipline, a cognate discipline, or the equivalent, since this may act as a postgraduate conversion degree, and also other, relevant experience will also be taken into consideration. 2. The compulsory research methods course is taken in the first half-session, alongside the compulsory advanced social theory course. 3. The two optional courses are taken in the second half-session, and should be selected in consultation with the degree programme co-ordinator. One of the option courses should be selected to assist with the dissertation topic. 4. The dissertation will be completed towards the end of the degree programme. However, an Adviser should be allocated, and a suitable topic and methodological approach established, at the beginning of the second half-session. 5. Students who leave with 60 credit points can exit with a Postgraduate Certificate, and 120 credit points a Diploma in Sociology. A performance measure will be in operation, to permit entry into the dissertation course and thus to exit with the MSc. Students performance may be recognised with the award of a distinction or commendation in the degree. %&'@ {>D !ǺDZ h Nh)Phd h)POJQJh)P>*OJQJh)POJQJh)P6OJQJhmeLh)POJQJ^Jh)POJQJ^Jh)P6OJQJ^JhDh)P5OJQJ^JhDh)P5OJQJh)P5OJQJ&' > & X h gd N h^h`gd Ngd N 6$gd N D%gd NRz{=>EFg !gd N h^h`gd N gd N <P1h:prG.
