They must have previous relevant experience and be able to undertake studies and related developments in their workplace setting or other appropriate agency. Aims: For aspiring and existing leaders in various professional settings, the programme will provide a framework for leadership development which takes account of the circumstances generated by changes in social and economic conditions, and by government and local authority policies. Participants will: extend their knowledge and understanding of leadership and management theory engage in critical reflection on their own practice by analysing critically evidence and arguments to support professional judgements in complex and sometimes ambiguous situations enhance their skills to lead improvement in professional settings (including education, social services, nursing, other caring agencies and the police) frame enquiries into practice to make an informed contribution to current professional debates work towards, and demonstrate competence against a range of professional standards By providing a flexible programme of modules, the programme will: show how research generates different perspectives on professional knowledge enable participants to gain a deeper understanding of a range of theoretical approaches and how these can be applied to improve professional practice facilitate the generation, leading and evaluation of change solutions in a variety of practice settings Content: The programme provides a menu of courses carrying either 15 or 30 credit points at SCQF Level 11 (PG5). Participants who successfully complete 60 credits may leave with a Certificate. Those who successfully complete 120 credits may leave with a Diploma and the MSc degree is awarded on the successful completion of 180 credits. Three main kinds of courses enable participants to choose a pathway which reflects their own experience and qualification aspirations: A. Demonstrating Leadership (for participants who have achieved 120 credits by study or by assessment of prior learning [APL] and who can provide a CPD portfolio which contains evidence of leadership activity) The Work-based Project (Standard for Headship) (60 credits) Assessment: Participants will complete summative assessments for each course including the dissertation or work-based project. Assessment serves formative, summative and evaluative purposes within individual courses and programmes of study. Thus assessment is used to support learning, provide evidence of individual achievement, provide insights into the quality of learning and inform review of the design and delivery of courses. Evidence of individual achievement in summative assessment tasks recorded for certification purposes will be judged against course criteria, and related to the Common Assessment Scale (CAS). There is now an endorsed form of the existing award, the MSc in Leadership in Professional Contexts (incorporating the Standard for Headship) to facilitate recognition of the subset of students taking the programme who have demonstrated attainment of the Standard for Headship and the effective and efficient communication of such information to the GTCS. Students wishing to achieve the endorsed form of the award will be required to gain 120 credits from the taught courses offered on the programme and then undertake a compulsory course The Work-based Project (Standard for Headship) Students wishing to gain the Scottish Qualification for Headship on completion of the Leadership in Professional Contexts programme must negotiate access to a suitable leadership development project in their own school with the support of their headteacher and local authority. For accreditation purposes, the leadership capabilities of students must be confirmed by a professional verifier nominated by the Programme Director.
