Under exceptional circumstances, applicants without these qualifications may still be admitted, provided they have an approved level of work or other experience in a related field and strong references. Duration: 12 months full-time or 24 months part-time (MSc); 9 months full-time (PgDip); 4 months full-time (PgCert). Aims: The MSc in Sex, Gender, Violence: Contemporary Critical Approaches is an inter-disciplinary course which analyzes contemporary forms of violence, especially as they are related to sex and gender. Syllabus: The programme will consist of 180 credit points comprising: (1) Two compulsory 30 credit point modules: Sex, Gender, Violence: Critical Approaches and Advanced Social Theory. (2) Two 30 credit point options: a research methods course (normally SO 5011) and an additional, elective course (as agreed with the programme co-ordinator). (3) A dissertation project of 12,500 words on an agreed topic (60 credit points). Courses are 100% continuous assessment, but perhaps, with the exception of the specialist option, relating to the dissertation topic. Students can obtain a Postgraduate Certificate on satisfactory completion of modules to the value of 60 credit points (at least 40 at level 5), or a Diploma in Sex, Gender, Violence: Contemporary Critical Approaches should they exit with modules worth 120 credit points passed successfully (at least 90 at level 5). The MSc in Sex, Gender, Violence: Contemporary Critical Approaches requires the student to pass the dissertation and the six modules (at least 150 credit points at level 5). The degree of MSc shall not be awarded to a candidate who fails to achieve a CAS mark of 9 or above in the Dissertation (SO 5906), irrespective of their performance in other courses. Notes: 1. The dissertation will be completed towards the end of the degree programme.
