Duration: 12 months full-time, September intake. Aim: To train International students recruited as part of the Wellcome Trust Strategic Award for Medical Mycology and Fungal Immunology at Aberdeen University in core skills and knowledge that are required to proceed to PhD studies in this research field. The two research projects are a core component of this programme and will provide intensive practical training in state-of-art research techniques in microbiology, in particular medical mycology, molecular biology and cellular immunology. The MRes requires 85 credits of taught material plus 120 credits independent research. Stage 1 GS 50M1 Generic Skills (0 credit points) SK 5003 Information Skills (0 credit points) IM5001 Immunology: back to basics (10 credit points) IM5005 Immunology in Health and Disease (20 credit points) MB5015 Molecular Biology Basics and Cloning Lab (15 credit points) MB5016 Advanced Molecular and Functional Genomics (15 credit points) Stage 2 MC5508 Research Tools for Fungal Immunology (10 credit points) MC5509 Research Project 1 (60 credit points) Stage 3 MC5901 Research Project 2 (60 credit points) MC5503 Molecular Approaches to Microbiology (15 credit points) Students will be advised on the process for project allocation at registration. The research projects will be in the areas of Molecular and Cellular Immunology and Fungal Biology. Assessment: By practical work, by written essays, written examinations, by oral presentations or by a combination of these as prescribed for each course. The thesis will be assessed and the student will undertake oral examination on completion of the programme. Candidates must pass all courses at an appropriate standard for the award of the MRes degree. Students will proceed from Stage 2 to Stage 3 prior to the outcome of Stage 2 (project 1), however, as the entry requirements are at a higher level, it is anticipated that students not achieving at the required standard will be identified at the end of Stage 1. In the event that a student does not meet the requirement to continue from Stage 2 to Stage 3, they will withdraw from project 2 and, if applicable, be awarded the PgDip.
