Duration: 12 months full-time (MRes); 9 months full-time (PgDip); 4 months full time (PgCert). Content: The courses are drawn from across the School of Biological Sciences and are taught in a series of three or six week modules, together with instructions in related common skills. A number of courses that are core to other programmes can be selected for this programme. Students will undertake a 30 and a 60 credit project. During stages 1 and 2 , students will undertake the 30 credit project. This is expected to complement the taught material and be tailored towards personal interest. Following the stages 1 and 2 , students may proceed to the individual research project (60 credits) if they have successfully passed all course assessments and project requirements. Both projects will culminate in the submission off a thesis in the format of a peer reviewed paper. Candidates must attend the following designated programme of courses unless they have previously passed courses deemed by the Programme Co-ordinator to be equivalent to one or more of the specified modules, in which case another course must be taken with approval from the Programme Co-ordinator. Candidates must take a minimum of 120 credits of courses from the compulsory and elective courses in stages 1 and 2. Stage 1 EV5006 Core Skills for Environmental Sciences (15 credit points) EV5303 Environmental Microbiology & Biotechnology (15 credit points) Electives: BI5301 Environmental Pollution (15 credit points) PL5001 Plant Ecology (15 credit points) PL5303 Ecosystem Process (15 credit points) SS5008 Global Soil Geography (15 credit points) EV5513 Application of GIS in Environmental Science, Soil Science and Environmental Microbiology (7.5 credit points) EK5406 Responding to Global Change (7.5 credit points) Or as approved by the programme co-ordinator. Stage 2 EV5903 Literature Review in Environmental Sciences (3 credit points) SS5904 Land Use and the Environment on Deeside (3 credit points) EV5512 Environmental Science Research and Investigation (30 credit points) Electives: SS5500 Remediation Technology (15 credit points) EV5800 Environmental Analysis (15 credit points) PL5504 Biology and Ecology of Mycorrihizas (7.5 credit points) BI5901 Research Project Planning (7.5 credit points) EV5804 Environmental Impact Assessment (15 credit points) BI5701 Readings in Ecology and Environmental Sustainability (7.5 credit points) EV5505 Critical Reviews in Environmental Science (7.5 credit points) BI5802 Ecological and Environmental Modelling (15 credit points) Or another appropriate course as approved by the programme co-ordinator. Only candidates who complete the above programme will be allowed to progress to the project stage. Candidates who fail to achieve the standard for progression to, or who elect not to proceed to, the final stage shall be awarded a Postgraduate Diploma if they have achieved the appropriate number of credits for that award. Stage 3 EV5902 Project in Environmental Science (60 credit points) Assessment: By a combination of (1) written assignments and laboratory reports for taught each course, and (2) a dissertation (submitted in agreed manuscript format) covering both research projects. MRes candidates are usually required to attend an oral examination. The degree of MRes shall not be awarded to a candidate who fails to achieve a CAS mark of 9 or above in EV 5512 or EV 5902, irrespective of their performance in other courses.
