Duration: 12 months full-time (MRes); 9 months full-time (PgDip); 4 full time (PgCert). Content: The courses are drawn from across the School of Biological Sciences and are taught in a series of three or six week modules, together with instructions in related common skills. A number of courses that are core to other programmes can be selected for this programme. Students will undertake a 30 and a 60 credit project. During the instructional stage of the programme of courses, students will undertake the 30 credit project. This is expected to complement the taught material and be tailored towards personal interest. Following the instructional stage of the programme of courses, students may proceed to the individual research project (60 credits) if they have successfully passed all course assessments and project requirements. Both projects will culminate in the submission off a thesis in the format of a peer reviewed paper. Candidates must attend the following designated programme of courses unless they have previously passed courses deemed by the Programme Co-ordinator to be equivalent to one or more of the specified modules, in which case another course must be taken from those indicated. Candidates must take a minimum of 120 credits of courses from the compulsory and elective courses in stages 1 and 2. Stage 1 EV5006 Core Skills for Environmental Sciences (15 credit points) EV5303 Environmental Microbiology & Biotechnology (15 credit points) SS5008 Global Soil Geography (15 credit points) Electives: BI5301 Environmental Pollution (15 credit points) EK5406 Responding to Global Change (7.5 credit points) EV5513 Application of GIS to Environmental Science, Soil Science and Environmental Microbiology (7.5 credit points) PL5303 Ecosystem Process (15 credit points) Or as approved by the Programme Co-ordinator. Stage 2 EV5903 Literature Review in Environmental Sciences (3 credit points) SS5904 Land Use and the Environment on Deeside (Ballater Field Trip) (3 credit points) SS5507 Soil Science Research and Investigation (30 credit points) Electives: EV5800 Environmental Analysis (15 credit points) EV5505 Critical Reviews in Environmental Sciences (7.5 credit points) PL5700 Biology and Ecology of Mycorrhizas (7.5 credit points) SS5500 Remediation Technology (15 credit points) BI5901 Research Project Planning (7.5 credit points) EV5804 Environmental Impact Assessment (15 credit points) BI5701 Readings in Ecology and Environmental Sustainability (7.5 credit points) EV5513 Application of GIS in Environmental Science, Soil Science and Environmental Microbiology (7.5 credit points) Or as approved by the Programme Co-ordinator. Only candidates who complete the above programme at an appropriate standard will be allowed to progress to the project stage. Candidates who fail to achieve the standard for progression to, or who elect not to proceed to, the final stage shall be awarded a Postgraduate Diploma if they have achieved the appropriate number of credits for that award. Stage 3 (MSc only) SS5903 Project in Soil Science (60 credit points) Assessment: By a combination of (1) written assignments and laboratory reports for taught each course, and (2) a dissertation (submitted in agreed manuscript format) covering both research projects. MRes candidates are usually required to attend an oral examination. The degree of MRes shall not be awarded to a candidate who fails to achieve a CAS mark of 9 or above in SS 55077 or SS 5903, irrespective of their performance in other courses. !*+>X ] f 89A:qs@AI')4ekl ٺ٫٠٠ٓ~٠٠٠٠٠٠٠٠)h4&}hl56>*CJOJQJ^JaJhhlOJQJaJh0hlOJQJhhlOJQJmH sH h4mhlOJQJhl>*OJQJh"cfhlOJQJhlOJQJhl6OJQJh4&}5OJQJh"h4&}5OJQJ-"=> \ ] 9:BC 0d6gdl d6gdlgdl$ 0d6a$gdl 0d6gdl 0d6gd4&}$a$gd4&}gd4&}:q@AIJ()4e 0d6gdl 8gdl $ 8a$gdl gdl 0d6gdl d6gd* d6gdlOMN|}"#gdEuW$ 0d6a$gdl 0d6gdl gdl d6gdlM#. hEuWh2hlhl6OJQJhlOJQJhl>*OJQJh0hlOJQJhlOJQJ^J21h:p[=.
