Content: The Masters programme aims to provide training for research on the biology, ecology and sustainable management of biological resources, for students intending to carry on to do a PhD, and for those seeking careers in ecological research, conservation and management. Potential doctoral students will gain multi-disciplinary research skills and practical experience of working in active research environments alongside established scientists and will be trained to develop, execute and manage individual research projects. Students will also receive training via taught modules based on current research of contributing scientists drawn from diverse ecological disciplines. The programme is run within the School of Biological Sciences. Candidates shall be required to attend the following courses (all compulsory unless otherwise state): Candidates must attend the following designated programme of courses unless they have previously passed courses deemed by the Programme Co-ordinator to be equivalent to one or more of the specified modules, in which case another course must be taken with approval from the Programme Co-ordinator. Candidates must take a minimum of 120 credits of courses from the compulsory and elective courses in stages 1 and 2. Stage 1 EK5003 Introduction to Ecological Field Research in Northern Scotland (7.5 credit points) PL5001 Plant Ecology (15 credit points) BI5009 Experimental Design and Analysis (15 credit points) ZO5304 Population Ecology (15 credit points) EK5002 Personal Research Development (10 credit points) EV5402 Introduction to GIS (7.5 credit points) Plus 15 credit points from the following list: ZO5303 Aquaculture (7.5 credit points) ZO5403 Network Science (7.5 credit points) BI5010 Statistics for Complex Designs (7.5 credit points) EK5405 Molecular Ecological Techniques (7.5 credit points) SS5305 Soils of Food Security (15 credit points) FY5303 Silviculture: Applied Forest Ecology (15 credit points) Stage 2 EK5805 Research Project Planning (7.5 credit points) Plus 15 credit points from the following list: EK5506 Ecology and Society (15 credit points) PL5504 Biology and Ecology of Mycorrhizas (7.5 credit points) ZO5508 Marine Spatial Management and Top Predators (15 credit point) EK5702 Applied Ecological Modelling (7.5 credit points) BI5701 Readings in Ecology and Environmental Sustainability (7.5 credit points) BI5505 Introduction to Bayesian Inference (7.5 credit points) EV5511 Spatial Information Analysis (7.5 credit points) EK5804 Environmental Impact Assessment (15 credit points) EK5703 Freshwater Ecology (7.5 credit points) ZO5803 Concepts on Conservation (7.5 credit points) EK5509 Controlled Environment Research Project (22.5 credit points) Only candidates who complete the above programme at an appropriate standard will be allowed to progress to the Final Stage. Candidates who fail to achieve the standard for progression to, or who elect not to proceed to, the final stage shall be awarded a Postgraduate Diploma if they have achieved the appropriate number of credits for that award. Stage 3 ZO5901 Project in Ecology (60 credit points) Assessment: By a combination of (1) written assignments and laboratory reports as prescribed for each course, and (2) a dissertation covering the research project. MRes and Diploma candidates are usually required to attend an oral examination. Only candidates who complete (1) at an appropriate standard will be allowed to progress to the final stage leading to an MRes degree. 5JKLU ~IJQRSV̼̼䮣{̇{{̇{k^Nh+h+>*CJOJQJ^Jhu>*CJOJQJ^Jh+hu>*CJOJQJ^JhfCJOJQJ^Jh+h]MlCJOJQJ^Jh+h+CJOJQJhu>*CJOJQJh+hu>*CJOJQJh+hu6CJOJQJ^Jh+huCJOJQJ^Jh+huCJh+huCJOJQJh+hu5CJOJQJ6JKL Ly7b I gdf p#dgd+gd+IJRS$i/j NO gd+ # p@ Hd9gdf gdfVY$IL89 Nbcd実実{t h=h|}huh+hu6CJOJQJ^Jh+hu>*CJOJQJ^Jh+h]MlCJOJQJ^Jh+h=NCJOJQJ^Jh+huCJOJQJh+hfCJOJQJ^JhfCJOJQJ^Jh+huCJOJQJ^Jhu0CJOJQJ^Jbcdgd= gdu gd+21h:p[=.
