Following on from last year's talk about the ghost story as a Christmas tradition, Dr Helena Ifill returns with a follow-on online event on Thursday 10 December from 4pm-5pm (GMT) to delve into this topic in more detail.
It was during the Victorian period that the Christmas ghost story became an established tradition. But what were these stories actually about, and what do they reveal about Victorian attitudes and anxieties?
In this talk Dr Helena Ifill explores a selection of ghost stories specifically set during the Christmas period, and talks about how they simultaneously question and reinforce Victorian concerns with the sanctity of the family, often through depictions of situations that most certainly don’t involve comfort and joy.
