"'Pronounced by Mr Byres to be an undoubted Raffaelle': James Byres as Artist, Expert and Dealer", William Paton (History of Art, Aberdeen)
James Byres of Tonley, Aberdeenshire (1734-1817) was an art dealer and cicerone in Grand Tour-era Rome. He was responsible for selling important pictures and artefacts to British and other patrons. The son of a Jacobite exile, he was briefly trained as an artist under Anton Raphael Mengs, an experience that appears to have shaped his career in various ways.
