Café Sci - Weight, Muscle and Ageing: The Science Behind the New Weight-Loss Drugs
-

Join us for our October Café Sci where Dr Brendan Gabriel will be discussing GLP-1 drugs and the science behind the strategies that could help people gain the benefits of weight-loss medications while preserving the muscle they need.

GLP-1 drugs such as Ozempic and Wegovy have transformed the treatment of obesity and helped millions of people lose weight. But alongside weight loss often comes a less talked about effect: a meaningful loss of muscle mass too. And as we age, when we naturally lose muscle, strength and function, maintaining muscle becomes increasingly important.

This talk explores what happens to muscle during weight loss, why it matters for healthy ageing, and what we can do about it. From exercise and nutrition to emerging new treatments, we'll look at the science behind the strategies that could help people gain the benefits of weight-loss medications while preserving the muscle they need.
