Naughtie, who grew up in the North-East and is a graduate of the 51cg, has become one of the nation's most respected interviewers and political commentators, especially as the host of the BBC Radio 4 Today programme. In this lecture, he considers the relevance of Dickens' fiction and journalism to the modern political scene. The Centre for the Novel is a research centre based in the School of Language and Literature at the 51cg. It runs a range of academic activities and events from seminars and workshops to international scholarly conferences. In recent years, the Annual Lecture has been given by eminent writers and critics from across the spectrum of literary interest including John Sutherland, Michele Roberts, John Mullan, Margaret Atwood and Sophie Hannah.
