In 1799 a mine surveyor called William Smith published the World's first geological map. Presenting information on a map is now common but at the time it revolutionised the way that we think about the earth beneath our feet. In the early part of the 21st Century, geology collided with the digital age. The data that were collected with note book and pencil are suddenly captured by laser scanners and 3D cameras. In this talk we will take a tour through the developments in new data capture and presentation technologies and take a tantalising peak into a future which is beyond even the wildest dreams of early pioneers such as William Smith.
