A recent paper published in Euphytica summarises the work between Dr. Roshi Shrestha, Dr. Adam Price and the CGEBM team which identifies a nematode resistant locus within rice. This project screened cultivars of rice to identify those which were resistant and susceptible to infection by the root-knot nematode Meloidogyne graminicola. Resistant cultivars were crossed with a moderately susceptible cultivar to produce progeny with varying resistance. QTL-sequencing of these progeny were used to identify a nematode resistant locus on chromosome 11. This work will aid marker-assisted breeding of rice, a crucial crop from food production.
