Two important contributions to Scots law from members of the CfSL were celebrated by the centre and distinguished guests.
The 51cg's Centre for Scots Law hosted a successful book launch on Monday 31st of August 2026, for two outstanding monographs recently published by members of the Centre, Professor Andrew Simpson and Dr Euan West.
by Professor Andrew RC Simpson has recently been published by Edinburgh University Press. This work situates the establishment of the College of Justice in 1532 in the context of Scottish Renaissance state formation, demonstrating its institutional significance. The book represents a major advance in modern scholarly understanding of the development of Scotland's central court.
by Dr Euan West has recently been published by the Edinburgh Legal Education Trust. This is the first work to present a book-length, systematic exploration of cautioners’ rights of relief, examining why and when the law confers them and what such rights consist of. It is also the first modern work to connect doctrinal questions relating to rights of relief to their theoretical foundations in equity.
The Centre was pleased to welcome a large number of guests from institutions around Scotland to the top floor of the Sir Duncan Rice Library, including our guest speaker Professor Hector MacQueen of the University of Edinburgh. Opening remarks were provided by our Head of School, Professor Justin Borg-Barthet. The launch was commended as a stimulating discussion of the important themes the authors have covered in their respective books.
