The pursuit of accountability for serious breaches of international human rights law and international criminal law has taken a domestic turn, with many cases being pursued via universal jurisdiction and via the establishment of hybrid and domestic mechanisms to try alleged perpetrators. The Office of the Special Prosecutor for the Republic of The Gambia, created on the recommendation of its Truth, Reconciliation and Reparations Commission, is a notable example of the efforts made domestically to secure accountability for historic abuses, with the challenging mandate of prosecuting alleged perpetrators during a period of transitional justice. Martin Hackett, Barrister and Special Prosecutor for the Republic of The Gambia, joins us for a discussion on 'International Prosecutions and Transitional Justice' to offer a practice-led perspective on the challenges and successes of operating such an office.
