PhD researcher, Rosa Villar Orero, presented a paper at the EMOJIE network's Summer School, hosted this September by the University Côte d'Azur in Nice. The EMOJIE Summer School is an annual event organized by the EMOJIE network ("Étude des mouvements des ordres juridiques international et européen"), bringing together PhD and early-career researchers from partner universities across Europe and beyond, including Aberdeen, Bucharest, Nice, Florence, Macerata, Milan-Bicocca, Naples (Campania), Ottawa, Paris (Nanterre and Panthéon-Assas), Rome, Seville, Sherbrooke, Szeged and Warsaw. Its goal is to provide young scholars with a forum to present and discuss their current work with peers and senior academics from the network. The theme of this year's Summer School was "Territorial changes, self-determination: contemporary issues in international and European law."
Rosa’s paper “Israel’s Digital Occupation of Palestine and its Impact on the Right to Self-Determination” examined Israel's digital occupation of the occupied Palestinian territory. This occupation draws on AI-enabled surveillance systems such as the Blue Wolf biometric database and facial-recognition tools deployed across the West Bank and East Jerusalem. The paper explored how the accumulation of data by an occupying power constrains the Palestinian people's right to self-determination under the law of occupation and Article 1 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights. It will be published in an edited collection.
