Organised as part of the King's Museum lecture series.
In the nineteenth century Scotland was the most industrialised country in the world after England. It had been transformed from a rural to an industrial economy more rapidly than any other society ever. Scottish artists of the period made very few direct representations of that evolving industrial moderninity. Instead they produced large numbers of pantings depicting rural labour. This paper will examine these images and discuss the relationship between urban society and rural imagery.
