A new student-curated exhibition in King's Museum explores the idea of the Scottish Warrior

As part of its bookbindings exhibition, Cover Stories, the Special Collections Centre at the 51cg is hosting a series of five talks that focus on some of the individuals behind the bindings - those who owned the books, commissioned or designed their covers.

This talk examines the life of Maria Graham (1785-1842), a travel writer, editor, historian and naturalist, whose journeys took her from Enlightenment Edinburgh to India and Dundee to the emperor's court in Rio, experiences which she vividly depicted through her books, her art and her correspondence.

To accompany the exhibition, Cover Stories, its curator, Jane Pirie, will discuss the choice of exhibits and expand on the stories behind the bindings.

Though he never became king's printer, Andrew Hart was the most successful Scottish book printer and publisher before the Restoration. This talk will trace his career as agent of religious nonconformity; as commercial opportunist with various continental and English collaborators, and as publisher of John Napier of Merchiston.
