There are are a variety of journals and societies that publish medical humanities work, hold conferences and award prizes in this area. Aberdeen medical students have been sucessful in relation to the following examples but there are others out there!

John Ellis Student Prize

The Junior Association for the Study of Medical Education (JASME) is a career group within ASME for medical students and Foundation Year doctors. One of its key goals is to encourage, promote and conduct medical education research initiated by students and junior doctors.
The Sir John Ellis Prize is an established and highly regarded national prize for new student work on a topic within medical education. Besides being awarded the prize, winners will be invited to present their
work at a plenary session of the ASME Annual Scholarship Meeting.
GLADD The Association of LGBTQ+Doctors and Dentists
GLADD is running a Student Prize, inviting all Medical and Dental students to present a piece of creative writing (excluding academic essays) on the subject of ‘The History of LGBTQ+ Medicine’. This competition will give participants the opportunity to
explore an area of healthcare that they may be less familiar with and present their findings to a panel of high-profile judges in a way that promotes creativity and originality in their work. Deadline 21st Oct 2024
Prizes will
be awarded to the entrants by our judging panel, made up of GLADD committee
members and special judges and . All entrants will receive a free
1-year GLADD membership and a signed certificate. There are also cash prizes
for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners. The

There is no
word limit within reason. Work of any length that suits the size of the
submission (with a suggested limit of 2000 words) will be accepted, but this is
dependent on the format of the piece. If a piece’s format necessitates a higher
word count, then it will still be accepted, and students may email students@gladd.co.uk for advice.

Society for the Social History of Medicine
Undergraduate Essay Prize
Three £100 prizes for the best unpublished original research essays in the social history of medicine, by medical, healthcare and allied
science students.
Roy Porter Student Essay Prize
£500 prize will be awarded to the best original, unpublished essay in the social history of medicine
The competition is open to undergraduate and post-graduate students in full or part-time education.
Hektoen International Journal and essay prize
Grand Prix Essay Competition
Two prizes will be awarded: $3000 for the
winner and $800 for the runner up. Topics might include art, history, literature, education, etc. as they relate to medicine. Essays should be under 1600 words. The deadline is April.
