Biography

Dr Alice Krzanich joined the university in 2022 as a Lecturer in Law and Legal History. She teaches across a range of areas including law and gender, private law, and legal history. Alice is originally from New Zealand, where she worked as a lawyer before commencing postgraduate studies in the UK.

Alice researches in the field of legal history, with a particular interest in Scots private law and its historical interaction with socio-economic factors such as gender and class. She has researched the contract of service as it related to female domestic servants in nineteenth-century Scotland, which formed the basis of her doctoral research, and continues to have an interest in the history of employment law in Scotland.

Alice is also a co-investigator on a 4-year research project funded by the Leverhulme Trust titled '', which is an interdisciplinary study of legal redress for injured feelings from 1750 up until the present point and covers areas of law such as contract, nuisance, defamation and negligence, among others.

Research Overview

Alice currently researches the history of private law in Scotland, with a particular emphasis on the law of the nineteenth century. She is interested in both doctrinal developments and how these developments can be explained or situated within the greater social, economic and cultural context of the time.

Alice teaches in the areas of private law, legal history, and law and gender.
