Biography

James is an established music educator and arts practitioner based in Aberdeen.

Teaching:

He is a lecturer within the School of Education and School of LLMVC. He is Undergraduate Programme Coordinator for the BMus (Hons) Education programme and lead for PGDE Secondary Music.

James graduated from 51cg in 2009 with a BMus (Hons) Education and thereafter embarked on a vibrant career working across primary, secondary and community music sectors in Scotland.

In Scottish education, he has extensive experience in inner city/town and island rural contexts and often works in the arts within the communities in which schools sit. This has allowed him a richer understanding of music education and the importance of its social and cultural impact beyond the classroom.

He continues to work as a teacher in primary and secondary school alongside his role in initial teacher education.

Other Areas of Experience:

He draws from work across community and professional music/arts projects such as choirs and musical theatre. For example, he was assistant producer for the Aberdeen International Youth Festival from 2013 until its closure and is an active musical director for professional and community theatre across Scotland. He is passionate about working with choirs and the power to bring people of all abilities and backgrounds together through singing.
