Biography
Michiel is co-director of the Centre for Private International Law and Transnational Governance and lecturer in private international law. He held visiting research and teaching positions at Singapore Management University, KU Leuven, and Maastricht University.
Michiel's current work focuses on the interplay between artificial intelligence and private international law. He is currently working on a monograph titled Private International Law and Artificial Intelligence in the EU and UK (Oxford University Press). He was awarded a Personal Research Fellowship by the Royal Society of Edinburgh in support of his research.
He has contributed the entry on artificial intelligence to the second edition of the Encyclopedia of Private International Law (forthcoming, Edward Elgar Publishing). Michiel will deliver a lecture on the private international law aspects of cross-border copyright infringements related to generative AI at the .
He has worked extensively on various topics relating to the regional and international harmonisation of private international law and has worked on projects relating to the reform of private international law in the European Union. He was appointed by the European Commission as a member of the , which is tasked to advise the Commission on the revision of the EU's rules on jurisdiction and recognition & enforcement in civil and commercial matters.
His work on the scope of jurisdiction in matters relating to a contract in the Brussels Ia Regulation was cited by Advocate General Szpunar in AB, AB-CD v Z EF. Further, his work was cited in the 2022 edition of Dicey, Morris & Collins on the Conflict of Laws and the 2023 .
Michiel convenes the Private International Law Section of the UK Society of Legal Scholars (SLS) together with Dr Patricia Živković.
