Research

Research Overview

In this group, we use a combination of experimental and computational approaches to look at making next generation solid state materials for applications in energy conversion and storage, as well as in exotic condensed matter physics.

Research Specialisms

  • Inorganic Chemistry
  • Condensed Matter Physics
  • Materials Science

Our research specialisms are based on the Higher Education Classification of Subjects (HECoS) which is , published under the licence.

Current Research

We are particularly interested in understanding how to use layers of different materials to create the properties we want. By combining layers of known materials together into a new material, the thermal, magnetic and electronic properties of the layers can combine and interact. We aim to understand the chemistry of layer combination in the bulk, as well as how to use it to make new functional materials.

We are also interested in applications of single crystal metal systems in condensed matter physics - in particular, how the breaking of certain symmetries allows for unusual physical properties to arise.
