Professor David Anderson from the School of Social Sciences and Dr Tavis Potts from the School of Geosciences hosted a workshop from the 17-19th June titled “The Politics and Pitfalls of Maritime Governance”, a part of the ESRC-funded network The Political Ecology of Coastal Societies. The recently funded network links UK and Japanese scholars, expanding upon the existing expertise of the 51cg (School of Social Science; School of Geosciences) and Tohoku University, Japan in political ecology, coastal governance and impacts of environmental change. The network focuses upon four central themes: 1) Kelp harvesting and intertidal tenure; 2) flood and disaster management, mitigation and human impacts; 3) coastal conservation and community interactions and 4) community conflicts in changing systems.
