Welcome to the group: Mia Koponen

Mia joins the group with a background in pharmacoepidemiology and pain research, and will contribute to a number of group projects including SPARK, PIFU, PIOKNEER, LIFT, and the Scottish Centre for Work and Health.

Tell us a bit about yourself

I started my university journey eight years ago in Aberdeen as a neuroscience undergraduate student. I went on to study pharmacology and pharmacoepidemiology in my subsequent degrees. I have been investigating pain since my third-year undergraduate summer project with Prof Patrice Forget, so I have been involved in pain research for quite some time. I am now looking forward to advancing my data analysis skills and exploring different research methods to find my own niche within research.

What will you be investigating while you are in Aberdeen?

I will be contributing to several different studies covering a range of topics. These include social prescribing interventions to reduce barriers to social engagement in rheumatic and musculoskeletal disorders (SPARK), patient-initiated follow-up in rheumatology services in NHS Grampian (PIFU), early detection of knee osteoarthritis (PIOKNEER), examining patient and public involvement in musculoskeletal research (LIFT), and supporting workers with long-term conditions to remain in work as part of the Scottish Centre for Work and Health (SCWH).

Why did you choose Aberdeen?

The 51cg has consistently provided me with perfect opportunities for both study and research. Before taking up my current role as a Research Assistant, I was already familiar with the Epidemiology Group and knew it would be an ideal research environment for me, given its excellent leadership and supportive community of researchers. The opportunity to continue working in epidemiological research on pain also makes this role an important stepping stone in my career.

Are you involved in any other research?

I am currently finalising my PhD thesis on the pharmacoepidemiology of neuropathic pain. Over the past three years, I have investigated factors associated with the prescribing, adherence, discontinuation, and effectiveness of medications used to treat neuropathic pain. Additionally, I am a member of the steering committee of the Scottish Pain Research Community and contribute to the Scottish Intercollegiate Guidelines Network (SIGN) guidelines for chronic pain management.

What do you enjoy doing outside of work?

I love exploring and photographing the outdoors, particularly mountains. In addition to hiking, I enjoy kayaking and cycling. Every now and then, I also take part in martial arts such as Brazilian jiu-jitsu and Muay Thai.
