Biography
Alisdair is a Senior Lecturer in Commercial Law, specialising in the law of debt, insolvency law and related areas. He is currently Deputy Head of the School of Law.
He joined the School of Law in 2018, having previously been a PhD student and then a teaching fellow at the University of Edinburgh. His PhD research was published as a monograph, (2020). Alisdair has continued to research this area, and co-edited (2022) and (2025).
He is also a co-author of and , co-editor of , Scottish editor of , and was formerly editor of (2019-2025).
Before commencing PhD research, Alisdair qualified as a solicitor and notary public with a leading law firm (2013). In addition, he holds an MA (Hons) in History (2007), an LLB (2010), and a Diploma in Legal Practice (2011). During his doctoral studies, Alisdair spent a year at the Max Planck Institute for Comparative and International Private Law in Hamburg (2014-2015), and has been a visiting scholar at the University of Oxford's Institute of European and Comparative Law (2022) and at Texas A&M University (2025).
He is on the WS Society's Council and is a member of the UK Jurisdiction Taskforce, Scottish Ministerial Working Group on Debt Solutions, European Law Institute, R3's Scottish Technical Committee, and the Law Society of Scotland's Banking, Company and Insolvency Law Sub-Committee. In 2025 he was a Scottish Parliament Academic Fellow focusing on digital assets.
Alisdair was Director of the Centre for Scots Law between 2023 and 2026. He regularly responds to consultations and calls for evidence. He also provides expert opinions and CPD regarding his areas of research.

Secured transactions, insolvency law, commercial law, company law, property law, law of trusts, comparative law, modern legal history.
Alisdair would be interested in supervising research students working in any of these areas. He is currently supervising LLM/PhD research on the following topics:
- The protection of shareholders in company law
- Employee participation in corporate governance
He has previously supervised research on: the law of securitisations; ex-ante protections for minority shareholders; financial security instruments for decommissioning liabilities; electronic letters of credit; and the nature and operation of trusts.
