Research Overview
Mátyás Bódig is legal theorist whose primary research interest is the methodological character of academic legal study (and legal doctrinal scholarship in particular). That involves exploring the methodological parameters of interdisciplinary engagement in academic legal research and the contribution of legal scholars to doctrinal development in modern state law and international human rights law. He is also interested in the interface between legal theory and political philosophy, as well as social theory.
Current Research
Mátyás Bódig currently works on a research project aimed at sorting out the relationship between legal doctrinal scholarship, the social sciences, the humanities, and policy research. Above all, he aims at a deeper understanding of the kind of interpretive analysis most legal scholars produce in their academic research. He also contributes to legal theoretical discussions on the implications of the growing trend of algorithmic regulation ('behavioural control by code') for modern state law.
Past Research
Mátyás Bódig's early research was focused on traditional themes of conceptual legal theory (the distinctive normativity of law, the relationship between law and morality, the political philosophical foundations of legal authority, etc.). Over the past two decades, his focus has shifted to exploring how legal theory can provide effective methodological support to legal doctrinal scholarship. That involves clarifying the epistemological character of the kind of doctrinal knowledge legal scholars cultivate, and also building a theoretical frame for interdisciplinary legal research. He also did substantial research into the dynamics of doctrinal development in international human rights law (with special emphasis on the role of soft law instruments and the impact of the state-centred nature of the institutional mechanisms of human rights law).

Teaching Responsibilities
Mátyás Bódig's teaching is concentrated in two fields: international human rights law and legal theory. He teaches courses on international human rights law both on Honours and LLM level. He also offers an elective Jurisprudence course (focused on the history of mainstream legal theory since the early 19th century) to undergraduate law students.
