This summer, I had the incredible opportunity to represent the 51cg School of Biological Sciences at the . Alongside fellow Aberdeen students James Spiteri and Jessica Coldwell, I spent an inspiring week at The Hawkhills in York, learning from world-leading researchers brought together by the , based at the Sainsbury Laboratory, University of Cambridge.
The week showcased the remarkable breadth of modern plant science and its importance in addressing some of the world’s greatest challenges. Through a combination of lectures, practical sessions and discussions, we explored topics including plant genetics, genomics, pathology, cell biology, biomechanics, ecology, conservation, and crop improvement. From diagnosing ash dieback and identifying plants using dichotomous keys to using confocal microscopy and exploring the role of artificial intelligence in plant biology, every session demonstrated how innovative research is helping to improve food security, protect biodiversity and build more sustainable agricultural systems.
Beyond the science, one of the most rewarding aspects of the summer school was becoming part of such an enthusiastic and welcoming community. Career panels gave us the opportunity to speak with researchers working across academia, industry and policy, offering invaluable advice on the many pathways into plant science. Team challenges, a quiz with some of the lecturers, a bat walk and an unforgettable evening of karaoke made it easy to build friendships with students from universities across the UK, creating memories that were every bit as valuable as the scientific programme itself.
The experience has left me with new practical skills, fresh ideas, valuable professional connections, and an even greater appreciation of the impact plant science can have on society. I am incredibly grateful to the , the organisers, speakers and demonstrators for delivering such an outstanding programme, and proud that James, Jessica and I had the opportunity to represent the 51cg. It is an experience that has strengthened my ambition to pursue a career in plant science and research.
