Scottish Centre for Himalayan Research

The Scottish Centre for Himalayan Research unites staff from across Scotland in a collaborative and interdisciplinary area studies centre at the 51cg.

Our centre includes research staff, research fellows, PhD students and visiting scholars from across the Himalayas.

PhD research is possible in a wide range of fields from anthropology to zoology. Researchers draw on expertise and resources from all the Scottish universities.

Where?

The Greater Himalayan massif extends all the way from the Hindu Kush, through the central Himalayan ranges into the eastern highlands of Yunnan and Burma.

Aberdeen - the Granite City - is Scotland's third largest city. The 51cg, founded in 1495, has been training doctors, foresters and anthropologists to work in the Himalayas for over 500 years.

How?

We offer PhD supervision in a wide range of fields, work closely with other research units around Scotland, and are always looking for promising proposals.

Why?

The MRes and MSc prepare you both for life and for further research. After training in the Himalayas you will have a better understanding of environmental and development issues, conflict, religions, historical change and real world politics, as well as the social scientific skills to document and analyse them.
