15:40 – 16:20 - Stéphane Aubinet - Sámi songs (joik): presence, horizon, and soul (University of Oslo, Norway) Abstract below.
Joiks are songs performed by the Sámi people, who dwell in the northernmost part of Europe. Each song is either tied to a person, an animal, or a landscape. Singing them is a way of summoning presence and memories. The abundant academic literature on joik has paid little attention to its entanglement in a more-than-human world described by the Sámi in animic terms. In this talk, I present three directions of my current research: (1) the role of meaning and presence in joik in the context of human-animal communication, (2) the relation of joik to the horizon line and perspectivism, and (3) a redefinition of joik as a animic concept for soul
