Join Accord to hear about Measuring & Monitoring Flared Methane Emissions to help to reduce them and in turn, contribute to tacking climate change. This session will be of particular interest to those studying in School of Engineering, Geosciences and Natural and Computing Sciences. After Carbon Dioxide, Methane is the most important greenhouse gas contributing to climate change. Combustor enables oil and gas operators to calculate combustion efficiency, CO2, Methane, CO2e emissions and provide a mechanism to reduce Methane emissions from their flaring operations. Combustor is a software application, integrated with Accord’s CHARM process modelling software, it is implemented using JAVA which makes it portable, efficient and deployable on cloud platforms. Combustor was launched in 2023, upon completion of a Net Zero Technology Centre project and in line with Accord’s research and development initiatives. The purpose of Combustor is to help operators meet the requirements of the North Sea Transition Authority Flare and Venting Guidelines and the Oil and Gas UK Methane Action Plan. Accord modelled Combustor for five operating assets across the North Sea with BP, Harbour, Serica, Ithaca and TotalEnergies. Currently combustion efficiency is assumed to be 98% for a properly operated flare system however with the development of Combustor there is now a direct method of measuring flare combustion efficiency and enabling flare optimisation. We’ll also include information about Accord and our graduate program at the beginning and end of the presentation on Combustor.
