This innovative joint doctoral programme combines world-class research excellence with regional relevance to equip you for leadership and advanced research skills in the field of pharmaceutical sciences and drug discovery.
This degree in pharmaceutical sciences brings together and Zarqa University to train researchers in the different stages of the drug discovery pipeline. The research encompasses the identification and characterisation of bioactive natural compounds, in silico drug design and drug optimisation, target identification and validation, and studying the mechanisms of drug action. Students will develop the skills needed to deliver robust, industry-relevant research that supports the creation of innovative medicines for unmet clinical needs.

At a Glance
The total duration of the programme is 4 years. You will study Years 1 and 4 at Zarqa University and Years 2 and 3 at the 51cg.
Year 1 commences October 2026 at Zarqa University. Students are expected to join the 51cg from October 2027.
Students will have a primary supervisor at the 51cg and a secondary supervisor at the University of Zarqa.
How you’ll study
Students must submit a thesis, pass a viva examination and submit periodic progression reports, which are essential for continued progress in the programme. Students are expected to complete the 51cg postgraduate research student training, monitoring and progression processes throughout their programme. The first progression report will be completed after the first 9 months whilst at Zarqa University. Students are also required to pass courses at the University of Zarqa.
Students are expected to attend regular meetings with their primary and secondary supervisors to review research progress and future plans. These meetings will be held virtually when the student is in Jordan.
With the exception of Years 1 and 4 being spent at Zarqa University, students on this programme are supported in the same way as all other postgraduate research students at the 51cg. Academic Requirements
- Minimum requirement - A 2:1 UK Honours degree or international equivalent
- For degrees from Jordan - A Bachelor’s degree with an overall grade of ‘Good’, ‘Very Good’ or ‘Excellent’
- Students should hold a master’s degree in pharmaceutical sciences or a relevant subject
- Applicants must meet the entry requirements of both the 51cg and Zarqa University

Fees
Tuition fees for this programme are payable to both universities:
- Years 1 and 4 - Fees paid to Zarqa University (subject to annual review and change)
- Years 2 and 3 - £27,300 (2026/27) paid to the 51cg in accordance with Aberdeen fee regulations. On registration at Aberdeen, students will be identified as Zarqa Partnership Students and will receive a 10% discount on standard tuition fees.
