Please note that the Visiting Elective application timeline has changed for the 2027 cohort.
Applications for July/August 2027 placements will open in January 2027, and we will no longer be accepting applications from September 2026 for these placements.
Placement length and specialty are subject to availability within our clinical areas. While there is no formal teaching programme, visiting elective students are able to take part in a variety of ward-based and clinical activities during their placement. Visiting students must be in their penultimate or final year of study and must be undertaking an elective as part of their medical degree requirements.
Students from international universities will be charged an administration fee of £250 for a 4-week elective placement or £125 for a 2-week elective placement, payable upon acceptance of the placement offer, this is non-refundable.
Please note that placement requests for longer than 4 weeks, are likely to not be accommodated due to capacity constraints A Disclosure Scotland PVG Check (£59) is also required. Students studying at a UK medical school are exempt from the administration fee but may still be required to complete the PVG process.
Further details about the PVG process can be found , including what additional documents you will need to complete this process. One document needed is a local police department check which must be submitted to the clinical elective team and PVG Scotland once an offer has been accepted.
Applicants whose degree is not taught and examined in English will need to provide evidence of English which meets the UoA Medical School requirements. In addition, all visiting students will need to provide a declaration of support from their University and complete an Occupational Health Check which requires copies of vaccination records.
Please note that any elective documentation which your University requires must be pre-approved in advance of any elective being agreed. The application form and guide will have further information on this and section to include these details.
The application form and guide will be available during the week of the 11th of January 2027.
